harley's spring

shutter speed: 1/50 sec, aperture: f/11, iso: 100, focal length: 33mm, manual setting
it's a spring of a motorbike named harley davidson parked near our office. still having the hangover of the "series," i made the actual one hoping to print this in a poster-sized artwork (hmmm 50cm x 30cm will do)to be hanged on the wall.

what do you think?

white balance

shutter speed: 1 sec, aperture: f/5.6, iso: 400, focal length: 47mm, manual setting, tripod with flash
i got inspired to carolyn, an australian art fanatic who we've met two nights ago. we visited to her flat near our place and seen a lot of paintings scattered. i noticed one thing... she loves series of a painting. it's just like a whole set of image sliced into segments or one image into many types of views...
...and so i did a little experiment.
i targeted this nightlamp in the living room with flourescent lighting on the left. i setup the tripod and an external flash due to lowlight conditions. i used different white balance settings of the camera to differentiate between them. starting from left, i use cloudy, flourescent, tungsten and auto balance settings.
no post-processing was done on this experiment aside from resizing it and putting into a frame.

note: be careful when taking shots on extreme temperatures such as this one. this might affect your lens and ccd when taking close up shots. if it cannot be avoided, try to expose it at shortest possible time.

self-portrait

shutter speed: 1/80 sec, aperture: f/5.6, iso: 400, focal length: 55mm, manual setting using external flash
aborigines from australia believes that if someone took their photos, it will steal their soul. in some way, it's quite true... taking away the events that happened in time and captured it thru a photograph.
this applies to self-portraits as well.
it's not selfish nor the desire of having our faces to be famous. it's all about expressing and sharing oneself through the lens and communicate in a different way. no words, just an expression. a self-portrait is the hardest photo to take... feeling the first glance at a photo can invoke a plethora of responses in a fraction of a second.
in a way, i felt shy. i prefer taking other people's photo rather than myself.

translated as "gold, silver, death", it is an architectural feng-sui or myth heard when i was a kid. when building a structure, a staircase for example, it must be counted very well and must be equal to "gold or silver" else your fortune will be bad or worse, death.
it was just a stack of chocolates brought by my friend who works in a choco factory (not willy wonka). it was placed on a white shiny paper lit with flourescent lighting. the image was taken on a "cloudy" white balance setting. it was manipulated a bit using hue/saturation and curves.
addendum: congratulations to japs and lisa (who i've just heard on the phone the screaming of lisa and later on the crying of a baby) to a birth of mak-mak, artists' baby boy.

give me light

shutter speed: 1/80 sec, aperture: f/2.9, iso: 200, focal length: forgotten, manual setting
"give me light, give me hope..."
during my vacation, while stuck in traffic (traffic was very bad in manila), i've spotted this man selling cigarettes on the streets and to the motorists.
he's trying to lit up his lighter while walking the opposite direction of the vehicles...
photoshop retouching:
- duplicated the image layer
- filter > gaussian blur (3.0) then opacity to 70%
- quick mask the top layer and erased the blurred subject (man)
- adjusted levels
congrats to manny and condolence to the family of mr. ernie baron.

necromancer

shutter speed: 25 sec, aperture: f/8, iso: 200, focal length: 33mm, manual setting
it was supposed to be another milk project but i got lazy and used the "moving lights" experiment instead. i setup the camera on a timer setting using a very slow shutter speed (25secs) with a small aperture (f8). as soon as the timer is ticking, i turned off the lights completely, two mobile phones on a flashlight mode on my lap covered. when i heard the snap, i waved the phones as wildly as i could...
...the effect, casting a spell of some sort.

weird habits
i've been tagged by len, about my top five weird habits of all time. i don't know if this bizaare or indifferent but i'll list them anyhow... not in order.gasoline. whether it's premium or super, i am very fond of smelling them. whenever we stop for petrol, i turned down the windows and smell the aromatic smell... next to coffee of course.
skin. when we trim our fingernails, sometimes the sides of the nails get's cut as well. i didn't remove them. in fact, i extend it further and play around with the next finger. i usually nibble it when there's nothing to do.
stink? believe it or not, i take a full bath every other day. my usual ritual would take me fifteen to forty minutes. i didn't my wash my hair for the next due to make my hair and scalp to oil (a secret of my shiny hair). still, i took a snap shower to remove the icky-ness of the body.
save the best for last. i'm referring to chicken skin. when fried, i remove the skin part and set it aside then eat the meat first. when almost done, i try to savour as i could till it's finished.
icky ball. pick the nose, curl it into a ball then flick it as far as it could...
there you have it, i leave it up to those who wants this meme. thanks len for passing. :P

full blown
i am weak... feeling very weak.it's gonna be the third day of this fever and yet i still insisted to go to work. although i didn't went to office yesterday (to the fact that i feel a little better yesterday), i need to recuperate.
stubborn guy.
what to do? i left a lot of pending jobs and their deadlines are very near schedule and i missed two important meetings with the client. for the third day i tried everything: popping some capsules, water therapy, the camping blanket, fruits, tea and lemon...
maybe i should see a doctor.
somehow, i don't trust doctors here. i wish my pediatrician would give me consultation (i'm still a kid..hehe). baaaaaad start for this year.

who are these people?
listen to this.it's not about popularity and who are these people behind these blogs. yuga of pinoyblog defended this.
this was my first time entering to such awards to see if how will things fair. i was tempted to enter the philippine web awards before but since i was also a member of a philippine design community, i heard some sourgraping and controversies behind these awards.
now, i'm feeling the pressure. i have decided not to enter any such awards anymore.
you decide. to me, this podcast is such a

busted fuse
in the beginning of this year, it's seem to be too dull for me. maybe it's just the swollen tonsil i'm having or the cold weather. probably i'm just homesick or still having the hangover from my vacation.i don't know, maybe uninspired.
one thing also was the addiction of being a shutterbug. since i got hooked up on this photography thing, a lot of things were left behind. i have forgotten to design, to innovate, and to work it all up for the goals i'm targeting. january is almost over and i haven't setup my goals this year. i need to lessen the shots. the result of this is to control the addiction. everyone has it whether it's drugs, s*x, games, or even blogging.
i'm an addict, photography that is... and i have to control it for a while.
now it's time to jumpstart myself once again to the design world. my apologies for those who were waiting which i promised to them. you know who you are... but for now, i have to finish my pending work in the office then delete the civilization iii game as soon as i get back home.
motivate. list. inspire. move.

zabeel park
it's an unappointed gig. tet called up and we agreed upon on visiting the newly open zabeel park near the trade center. just like any other big parks, the entrance fare cost only dhs5 per person. the park was divided into two sections connected to a footbridge crossing the main highway.the attractions are quite so-so but the thing it amuses me was the children's playground. it was well designed and fit for the rascals. another thing was the boat ride wherein you'll hop in a miniature ships and other marine vessels.

gang of four - part ii
continuation...after taking the abra ride at the creek, mondsi called and told that he saw us taking the tour. he was in dubai creek park. we decided to follow him and his friends there since there's nothing to do.
without SPO1 (you'll know soon enough), jmerts, japs and me went to see mondsi and took another photoshooting spree...
see the dirty specks in the camera's ccd?

rest in peace

swinging free

fishing or balancing act?

we left them and went back to our flat to recharge, rest and downloaded the pics... when suddenly another friend of ours inviting us to another tour. brends and her cousins wanted to go to dubai creek (again?) to see the birds in action and abra ride (what's with dubai creek?!).
once again, it was late. silhouette effect only.

the fifty fils abra ride

later on we went to dubai museum near bur dubai to see the history about this place. it's my first time visiting inside dubai museum. inside, it's similar to a wax museum with ambient background on the side. there you will see old photos and artifacts that happened from pre-islam to present.
fuego!

mga babae sa banga (women in the pot)

to tell you the truth, i didn't read about what's in there... just for photoshoot.
photo addict.

gang of four - part i
four shutterbugs went out together for the first time. tet, jmerts, japs and me ventured forth in the early morning going to our first subject, the burj al arab.since it was the eid celebration, a lot of lambs were sacrificed and we've seen the butchering in the streets...
footprints in the sand

the butcher

after we had enough of sniping and shooting, we went for a little stopover at starbucks. later on, we took a boat ride in dubai creek for an expensive ride of dhs80 in less than hour along the creek... it's better to take the big boat tour on dubai creek park for a bigger and better boat plus longer tour for dhs90.
abra ride, twin towers on the background

barrggh! you overpriced the fare!

mall of the emirates visit
buds and mike, my buddies from abu dhabi, gave me a wake up call and inviting me to go malling. they wanted to visit the mall of the emirates. since i haven't been there, i gave it a go signal to come with them. before the leisure, i decided to do a little house cleaning.moe is no different from any other malls here, to the fact that they only attached a giant alien-like structure from the outside which is the indoor ski slope plus the a dozen and two cinemas.

after visiting the mall, we lost our way going back to dubai and came across to this tree...

of course, it's photographer's instinct to go down and find a nice angle to shoot at. :D

bored night
we're celebrating (contradicting to the sheikh's death) another holiday in uae and this time it's eid ul-adha. although it's gonna be tomorrow, japs and i went for the photoshoot to prep up after paying his credit card debts.

the place was quite dull and dead (to the fact we came there around ten in the evening) and uninspired for the shoot...
ah, moods.

sudden stop
it was wednesday morning when my colleague's wife told the news that sheikh maktoum died. he was the vice president and the prime minister of uae and the ruler of dubai.my condolences to the family.
due to his death, businesses and offices were closed for days (government offices for 10). it was a bad timing for us. japs was stuck in qatar and he won't be able to issue his visa back here and his wife is due for labor pregnancy. another thing was the internet connection in our place was disconnected (i forgot to pay when i left for manila).
so i was stuck at home just playing civilization iii and too lazy for photoshoot (to the fact was businesses were closed).

vacation summary
after christmas, i've been on a hiatus and it's been a very very busy vacation for me. a lot of meetups and reunions were held, visiting various places, the shopping rush for christmas and dubai and of course, the moments with my family. this was my first time going home since i've stepped to dubai and it's quite an experience.during my stay there, i'd craved for the foods that i haven't tasted for a long time. the site almost became a food blog tempting my friends back in the sandlands. since it's the yuletide season, i've got the chance to feast on puto bumbong and bibingka. although there's pork in dubai, i'd still have the "freshly butchered" swines available in wet markets and groceries. high-cholesterol and nape killing lechon, chicharon bulaklak, balut, and sizzling plate's pork steak are amongst the faves. chicken were despised during my vacation but i cannot resist the temptation of kfc's chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes, macaroni salad, jollibee's chicken meal and andok's lechon manok (grilled chicken). beef were also a no-no but when i went for pancake house's tenderloin, tagaytay's beef for steak, nilaga and kaldereta. ahh, i definitely feasted upon it. there were new things i've tried as well such as greenwich's sisig pizza, and unknown dish ordered by my friends at north park and world topp's adobo flakes. they were great trying them. my craving for japanese food became a heaven for me when i got a chance to step in to a tokyo-tokyo fast food for sushi and pork tonkatsu. i love sushi. of course things will be complete if there's dessert. wifey's macaroni salad and buko pandan were the best. drinks such as taho and seattle's best javanilla shake with cheese croissant were the faves... alcohol? of course, san mig beer (pale, light or whatever).
most of the time i stayed at home but whenever there's means of transportation (commuting is a very tiring and risky especially when you're bringing stuffs such as the camera), i'd go to the places worthwhile to visit. first off, i visited my dad at loyola in marikina to pay my respects and thanking him. we've made a short-stop visit to manila bay and the baywalk area, to a church near sm mall of asia, the sweaty and crowded divisoria, the tagaytay lake and the beef market, makati business district and greenbelt area, our farm in cavite, los baños, and last but not the least, the malls.
reunions and social gatherings were at high during christmas season. that was the time i've also met of my friends, relatives and colleagues. i've also met some of the bloggers such as yuga, la vida lawyer (and wife?), attorney punzi during the venue-confused christmas party. i've met and seen with my coffee friends, my street tropa, long-lost nephew and nieces, sound and light system buddies, moviehouse junkies, cousins, cousins, and more cousins, high-school batchmates, wifey's relatives and my relatives.
finally, my quality time spent with my family. it's been hard being away that my youngest daughter, juliana, almost didn't recognize me as a father. the good thing was, the camera's with me and it's a kid's weakness... i got closer to her through the lenses. miles, however, was waiting for me for a long time. a smart and energetic kid. he even learned to bike on his own without support when i was there! as to my wifey, she changed. i don't know if it is bad or good but the important thing is that we love each other. we just have a bigger breathing room to each other... and i think it's best for us.
i still got the hangover of my vacation...

boga

a new weapon of choice for this new year's revelry. boga, originated and devised by the caviteños, was made out of pvc pipe, a kitchen lighter, and tin can. the tin can is used as a muffler, usually the lids cut off into a star-shaped and placed between the pvc pipe. the pipe may vary in sizes and there's a screwcap on the end. drilling a small hole, the wires of the kitchen lighter is placed and used as a detonator (or ignition). denatured alcohol was used as a fuel or ammo by spraying it inside using garden spray or perfume bottle then sealing it with a screwcap.
shake it for few seconds and pop the trigger. boom. sounds like super lolo firecracker.
it's safe, no gunpowder needed. unfortunately, better stock a lot of denatured alcohol due to it's popularity.
