still busy

yesterday, i really got pissed off with my colleagues. they've been calling me up since the evening event for the pics and i already transferred the files to the office laptop during the awards night for them to use.

then they took away my supposedly off and was forced to come to the office till 6pm. worse, the weather was not good... been raining for the whole day and i'm just wearing my house clothes going to office.

plus, i have to work and finish everything on my real day off, friday, and rush to the printer and be printed the next day. that's a couple of designs in thousands.

what a gloomy weekend...

ah one more thing, ibn battuta mall made their mall a real thing especially the andalusia mall section wherein a sky-painted ceiling was designed. this was taken by my roomie using sony ericsoon k750i.

ibn battuta, one roof, a lot of leaks...

been busy

we held two events in two different places in one day. in the morning, we held the conference at the newly-built al murooj rotana hotel. the place and food served is nice. i've also met our keynote speaker, mr. gerhard schroeder, former chancellor of germany (equivalent to president?).

west among the east

shutter speed: 1/80 sec, aperture: f/4.5, iso: 800, focal length: 80mm, manual setting using external flash

after the event my colleague and i went to burj al arab to setup things for the night's award ceremony. it's been my third time visiting the burj. i was designated to be the evening's photographer for our company (and for more work as always) and got a chance to shoot some big guys like schroeder, the saudi prince and one of the sheikhs. after the event proper, my colleague and i didn't wait for dinner and headed back home instead to sleep.

i even fell asleep while sorting out the pics i've taken...

new toy

shutter speed: 1/30 sec, aperture: f/4.5, iso: 400, focal length: 21mm, manual setting using external flash

after hours of my officmate's demonizing ways of tempting me to buy a new gadgetry, i finally gave in. he pointed me out the unlimited possibilities of shooting with a telephoto lens from attending to dubai tennis open to the top of burj al arab for the upcoming setup and awards event. last night, i ventured forth to the crowded streets of bur dubai to hunt for the store selling canon lenses. i did my research before i left office and called the shops to canvass the price.

i found some alternatives to canon lenses like sigma and tamron but i felt that i'm not going to be satisfied. it's quite cheaper but i'm not sure about the performance and quality. i still decided to go for canon. i scanned through the shops at fahidi street in bur dubai and finally found the store i've been looking for in which they're a distributor of canon products.

the lens i've got is ef 75-300mm f/4..5-5.6 in which is great for wildlife, sports, and outdoor shooting during daylight. unfortunately, i'll be having trouble again for low-light conditions.

what's the difference? most standard kit slr cams use 18-55mm for everyday use. i sat on the chair, set the lens to full zoom (55mm) and took the shot.

shutter speed: 1/30 sec, aperture: f/5.6, iso: 400, focal length: 55mm, manual setting using external flash

now i fitted the 75-300mm lens, set the lens to full zoom (300mm) and took the shot on the same spot.

shutter speed: 1/30 sec, aperture: f/5.6, iso: 400, focal length: 300mm, manual setting using external flash

voila! it's perfect for stalkers, wannabe paparazzis and the shy types. the problem however, is you have to move about five feet minimum away to get a closest focusing distance. i have to book myself for dubai tennis open matches and hopefully get tickets...

my idol

shutter speed: 1/60 sec, aperture: f/5.6, iso: 800, focal length: 18mm, manual setting with external flash

double portrait converted the image to black and white.

let's have a game...

if you have a digital camera, point and shoot or slr, it's time to test your skills and improve. take a photo of any person you desire and share me what you just did by commenting on this post and i'll try to be a "good/bad critique" on your photo to help improve your skills more. don't be afraid of the numbers in taking the right shot. i took me five times until i felt happy about this. besides, you don't waste any film!

give me the title of photo, who/where/when it was taken, and description.

the winner will get three prints of my shots taken around the city (size 10x12 prints). last day of submission: feb 28.

so what do you think of this? good luck!

happy balentayns

shutter speed: 1/30 sec, aperture: f/4.5, iso: 400, focal length: 31mm, manual setting with external flash

it was taken last week of january, bored and nothing to do at the house of aussie girl. i saw this vase full of poutpourri and toss it in on a white canvass covered with plastic cover.

it was meant to be a reflection thing... but i realised that valentine's coming. and this is the end product.

happy hearts everyone.

5:45pm window

shutter speed: 1/250 sec, aperture: f/6.3, iso: 200, focal length: 24mm, manual setting

"i'll show you my little heaven from this big hell-hole..."

last week after office, i had a chance to take photos of the cloudy skies of dubai in which it appears only during and after the winter months.

i don't have any other lens (which i'm planning to buy later on) and decided to take a series of photos (five in this case) and stitched and did other necessary pp work.

pp (post-processing) work:

- stitched the photos and masked the unwanted parts
- clone stamped part of the skies to be seamless
- levels, saturation adjusted
- added frame

see the unprocessed images and the large version.

back?

it's been a while i haven't blog due to busy scheds. anyway, here's the rundown...

work. it's been a hell-ish week for me. the usual make-things-be-done-in-a-minute became a routine and start of the week was like a bootcamp... drill sergeant shouting and screaming type. it almost made me quit, but the "war" is not yet over. i did some "surprise attacks" though and they didn't expected it. same-o, same oh.

cartoons. last week, a danish newspaper, jyllans-posten, was in the spotlight for publishing cartoons that outraged the muslim world. it turned into chaos. boycotting of goods and services, street protests and riots, cutting diplomatic ties went into effect especially in the mideast countries because they desecrated the sanctity of islam. jyllans and illustrators defended themselves thru reasoning of freedom of expression. other european countries went to jyllans' side by republishing it on their own papers.

i've been following the cartoon controversy for days and i see and listen to other people's point of view.

i was supposed to publish one of the cartoons for the purpose of illustration only but the sensitivity of the issue between freedom of speech and the principles and beliefs of a religion, i rather not to do what other publications did.

freedom of expression must be carried with responsibility and the media has the ethics, just like any other form whether a lawyer, doctor, or whatever, principles not to incite hatred, discrimination or to cause conflict. on the other hand, the muslims must calm down and protest in a peaceful way. yes, they have the right to be angry. even i, although not a muslim, will be pissed off if someone else's religion being bastardized but i'll never go out and burn someone's embassy or kill the perpetrator and their kind. to cap this issue, think twice before doin' anything stupid.

househunt. it's almost a month we're searching for the right place to stay. we looked and visited more than a dozen of to-let rooms, flats and villas, but since we're not that rich, we looked only we can afford and convenient.

up to now, we're still looking... it's hard to find a nice place to stay.

self. i'm not in the mood lately for everything. i feel sober and lonely... i miss my wife and my kids. alcohol won't do and help. neither do ciggies or shisha. i tried to avert everything to photography just to keep my hands and brain busy but my heart is still lonely. valentines coming and it's gonna be another SMB (samahang malalamig ang balentayns not sanmig beer)...

sacrifice.

needle in a haystack

shutter speed: 1/50 sec, aperture: f/6.3, iso: 400, focal length: 18mm, manual setting

now, it's hard to get a decent job here and the competition is difficult.

being a sort-of-a-hr-guy searching for the right person for the right job is hard. we've posted a job opening few days ago and up to now, the mailboxes are piling up on my boss' inbox. he decided to filter up to himself first then distributing it to each department on who's who seems to think the best. let say he got a thousand emails saying "my resume" or "applicalication for..." or "curiculam vitae" (take note of the spelling, that's how it was sent) he sorted it out and in our department; we received around fifty on the first day. we picked only the first day just because these guys are serious in taking up the job. from those mails received, we screened and filtered each and every one of them, word per word.

i don't have an education for human resources training but i have the common sense on who's really deserving for the upcoming opportunities (or dangers) ahead. first, i based on work experience, education, skills and portfolio. most of the people don't know how to do their resumes and to employer, it's important. i admit too that i'm not good in english but i'm careful in my spelling and grammar as much as possible. you present yourself and it reflects in your cv.

so how to have a better chance in getting the interview (and hopefully the job), especially in a multi-cultural place with an overloaded jobseekers like this?

cover letter. show to employer that you're really interested. you don't just attach your cv in an email or just put it on snail mail. tell yourself more on where and when did you see the job opening, your interest, what do you think why we should hire you, and where and when can we contact you.

well presented resume. forget the fancy stuff on a jpeg or whatever colorful paper with uber-designed graphics. ok, you're looking for a graphic designer job but you can present it on your portfolio instead. an honest, discreet and concise resume will do with no more than two pages.

put the strong assets you have. if you have a sturdy work experience, list 'em all and list all the achievements (not boring tasks like i typed a gazillion characters in a month checking every 1's and 0's) as long it is related to your job you're seeking. if you have cum laude or whatever degree, stress it out. if you are the walking swiss army knife skills or jack(a**)-of-all-trades that it will benefit your employer, give it all out. if you have a portfolio, list the significant ones and show the others later if you got the interview. forget the height-weight, who's your daddy-mommy, i love singing, dancing or porsche driving and all that crap... it's just a waste of space. in abroad, just your age, nationality, religion, language written/spoken, passport/visa details will do.

layout is essential. make it readable, stress out the strong points (did i make it boldfaced?) and in proper indention. check your grammar and spelling carefully. i can imagine myself (or you) seeing someone's grammar and spelling mistakes (remember "all you base are belong to us?") probably laughing your a** off or nodding in dismay. if you're not sure, let someone help you out.

your picture. unless you want to go for an artist job, looking glamorous or posing in a different angle, look presentable and neat. anyway, serial killers look neat sometimes; let's just disregard this... your employer just want to see on how you look like. a plus factor for good looking species.

i'm no guru in these job hunting but in my experience and reading the "resume building for dummies" when looking for a job before, it helped. and now i'm sharing it with you.

now, we're only down to two applicants who were having their test. good luck and hope this helped.

note: this is an advice to my fellow kabayans who want to venture forth to the sandlands, reality-based and it wasn't meant to discourage anyone.
