a pack of cigarettes... 6 dirhamsoriginal nikkor lens... 2500 dirhams
clear, round ashtray... 3 dirhams
DIY pish-ay... priceless.
just put the inner part of the ashtray to the front of your lens. so quit smoking and use the ashtray for your photographs.

ps. im almost on hiatus because we're busy putting up the mesnipers.com site. back to regular programming in a couple of days. :)

nikki's rebirth
nikki (my camera) worked very hard for a long time and she deserved to be pampered. i took my camera to a service center for sensor cleaning. i dont want to do it by myself that i might mess things up.having spots or little strand of hair in the viewfinder of a dslr camera is somewhat irritating when taking a shot. that's normal since that doesn't affect your image. but when you have a tiny little speck in your sensor, this means trouble. you will know that your sensor is dirty when you downloaded the image and see "dark spots" in it. these spots can be seen when taken on small apertures (f8 and above). bigger apertures doesnt affect much.
before the cleanup... spots were everywhere (in white circles)

f13, 1/200sec, -0.7ev, 12mm, iso200, cloudy, large version
it cost me dhs150 upon cleaning my sensor and the viewfinder. it's a worthy price since cloning out these spots will save you precious time during post-process.
from the service center, i took some tests:
checking the spots on whites

f11, 1sec, -0.7ev, 10mm, iso200, cloudy, large version
checking for dirt on blue skies

f18, 1/125sec, -0.7ev, 10mm, iso200, cloudy, large version
if you need your camera sensors cleaned, just drop by at the grand store maktoum street, opposite emirates bank near the clock tower. (i'm not sure for non-nikon users if they'll accept for cleaning).

resolution
first week of the year wasn't good for me. before 2007 ended, i was struck with fever and asthma. though i was able to shoot the fireworks on new year's eve, it seems my short-term sickness had a vacation as well and went back after. that's the reason on why my mind wasn't prepared to lay down my so-called new year's resolutions.though some of the plans were accomplished, there were setbacks and must be executed. since i got my residency few months back, there's no more reason not to finish it...
...just keep myself focused. i just list down on what's on my mind:
boxers. i love those sleek contoured briefs and its bacon-like garters but it's time to phase out these old-skool underwear. boxers are my new love and bought alot to replace them.
watch your health. i quit smoking and lessen my drinking but there are more things to keep an eye on since im not getting any younger. we have history of diabetes and soda consumption is off the charts. stubborn. sugar and blood pressure (though im still normal) are my new nemesis.
nikki's lonely. she worked too hard for the past couple of years and needed a company so badly. though there were no plans of retiring, i have to get a new camera body and hopefully few more lenses (such as the macro and fast zoom lens).
settle down. to have a new car, stable job (and hopefully a salary raise), girlfriend, and fat savings in the bank are my simple wishes. it's quite broad but we're getting there.
pick a country... just any country that i can afford for vacation. a new stamp in my passport would look nice and have more opportunities to travel and shoot. possible targets are china, jordan, egypt, turkey, kenya (though there's so much turmoil there), vietnam and/or thailand.
portfolio. it just needed to be competitive in the market. a little update and have to study new technologies in my field would make it good.
now, let's get it on.

happy new year!

new year fireworks at the burj al arab as we enter year 2008.
we were struck in traffic while going to the said venue. as soon as we saw the lights, i went down to the car, run and found a spot close as possible to shoot some.
i was fortunate to capture this momentous event.
happy new year everyone!
