iftar at satwa

"Iftar during Ramadan is often done as a community, with Muslims gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is done right after Maghrib (sunset) time. Traditionally, a date is the first thing to be consumed during Iftar when the fast is broken." - wikipedia
last week, i made an impromptu documentary of muslims breaking fast near satwa bus station. i brought only my uwa lens (10-20mm) and nikita (nikon d300) on my way home. if you're wondering that there were only men, i asked a muslim colleague of mine and she said that women and children can also join iftar. in this documentary though, these are the unfortunate ones who line up for charity. other tents were installed in other areas for women and children.
the holy month of ramadan comes to a close. eid mubarak everyone!

i finally got a copy of my photos published by driven, a men's lifestyle magazine based in canada. they consigned me to use my photos for their story with regards to dubai. they even included me in the contributors page as a bonus!
the photos included were nightscapades happened last march with a group of friends around dubai. since it was hot during daytime, we opted to go out in the evening instead. i didn't realize that people were interested in our little hideaways.
thank you drivenmag.

zaida

meet zaida, a half-pakistani and half-filipina referred by another photography client of mine. it was her first time to do serious modelling.
before the actual shoot, it is advisable to share tips and examples to your model on what to do so they can imitate, improve or to emote the concepts in mind. you can save a lot of time and effort during sessions. at first, she was stiff in her poses. as the session evolves, she's getting at ease with it. the key here is to make your subject relax in shoots to get the best frame.
we completed the session in an abandoned spanish villa in al wasl. we used everything we could find to use as props: the couch, dirty alcove, white closets, entrance door and dark hallways. there were lots of "gardens" but unfortunately, the sun was already scorching and we have to end it quickly. doing on-location shoots such as these can juice up your creativity. i prefer abandoned places just because of two things: it cost you nothing and ideas are endless, most especially for environmental portraits.
i used the usual strobist setup in this gig having two speedlights with shoot-through umbrellas mounted on light stands. on other occasions, i bounced the light using gold reflector.
