taking flights has always been my worst fear.
during the weekend, habibti and i watched the movie “up in the air”. it is a story about a corporate downsizer (a person who terminates jobs) and most of the time, travelling through the skies.
it reminded me on how i hated flying. i don’t know where my fear of heights or acrophobia started. during my early years here in dubai, i used to take visa runs where i have to leave out of the country every three months. most of the time, i ride a propeller aircraft and knowing about my fear, it was quite terrifying.

the worst incident so far was the time we landed in maldives. maldives composed of small islets and the biggest islands they have were malé, the capital and the airport. due to a limited runway, the plane missed its approach. we thought that we’re going to crash into the sea but luckily the pilot out-manuevered the plane, go-around and landed safely.

through the years, little by little i overcome my fear of heights. i am grateful to learn photography and it kept my fear at bay… busy looking and framing subjects on the ground or in the atmosphere during take-off, in-flight or landing. they’d say that one way of overcoming your fears is to challenge it…
…maybe i’ll try skydiving and taking snapshots to cure it

I am uncomfortable with heights, too; but for some reason my acrophobia is not triggered when I am on the air – in a helicopter, light plane or as a passenger in commercial airlines. However, I am uncomfortable at the edge of a tall building or near a sheer cliff but not going up on a personnel basket to the top of an oil platform. I can’t figure this out.
@bertN: i feel dizzy and uncomfortable as well when i’m in those situations. thanks for dropping by!
