american war memorial revisited

nikon d300, 19mm, f7.1, 1/80sec, iso200

it’s good to be back home after a three-year exile. i managed to take a vacation to my homeland, the philippines. although the trip is short, i never waste my time running errands, meet friends and visit close places.

photography is definitely listed in my itineraries. one of the nearest photo-friendly sites in my area is the american war memorial. located at fort bonifacio, taguig, it contains the largest number of graves of our military dead of world war ii with a total of 17,202. i have been to this place once and managed to visit the site again using different set of gears.

in this post, i used my usual camera (d300) and rely on usual composition techniques. later on, i made slight tone adjustments and converted the image using lightroom to black and white.

more awm shots soon. :)

sony di challenge 02 – high speed capture

sony a55, 18mm, f3.5, 1/250sec, iso3200, ev +1.3

on the second round of the sony di challenge, the professionals were required to submit high speed capture photos. using the continuous advance priority ae feature, sony put their mark as the fastest consumer camera in the market today shooting 10 frames per second. in this challenge, we were required to choose best three frames to compose as one image.

i was thinking of sports since it gave me more challenge. a friend suggested he knew someone from uae national karate team and it was a perfect scenario to capture motion. with a wide variety of kicks, attack and throws, i managed to select my own triptych.

once more, please help me win by giving me a pixel. to vote, you need to have a facebook account and this can only be accessed through a desktop/laptop computers. next is just follow these few simple steps:

during the eid holidays, i managed to attend three photo sessions. one of them was a portrait of a baby turning one. her mother needed the shots for her daughter’s birthday.  as i started to setup the equipment, i realised that i forgot to bring my backdrop. without it, i had to improvise.

“think and don’t panic.”

sony di challenge 01 – long exposure

sony a55, 15mm, f5.6, 124secs, iso200

i mentioned in my previous post that i joined a photography competition called sony digital imaging challenge. overall, there are four tasks that the we need to complete. the first challenge was to take a long exposure shot on a desert landscape using only a tripod and the sony a55 camera. the shot submitted must be unretouched and we are not allowed to post-process the image. in this photo, i used a two-minute exposure and the lighted tent as the subject.

to vote, you need to have a facebook account and this can only be accessed through a desktop/laptop. next is just follow these 5 simple steps:

1. please like the SONY DI CHALLENGE

2. the app will request for permission. Please click “ALLOW”

3. Once you have the access to the app, click the “VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE” box

4. my entry is a photo of a lighted tent on the second row under “PROFFESIONALS” (I know, it’s wrong spelling)

5. please “GIVE A PIXEL” in order for your vote to be counted

all done! feel free to check other photographers’ profile and work as well.

thank you so much for your support as i need it again in the upcoming challenges. :P

dashing south

nikon d300, 14mm, f4.8, 30secs, iso200

i never tried star trails before until i joined a recent photography competition. we were given certain cameras and the first challenge was taking photographs on a low-light desert landscape. while waiting for my “competition” gear to expose the scene on the north, i tried my personal cam facing south.

there are ways of taking star trails and you can find them all over the internet. the most common are single exposure shot and set of short exposures for stacking. i used the latter since light pollution caused by big cities was strong.  south was the only direction with less glow and took a lot of 30-sec exposures and later combined it using a specialised software such as startax.
